In 1415, on a muddy field, in the pouring rain, Henry V led England to a famous victory against a numerically superior opposition. And so over 600 years later, under similarly soggy and muddy conditions the Tigers, down to 8 players and missing their regular goalkeeper to a late fitness test, had to summon the Agincourt spirit to take on a Sundridge Allstars side that flaunted their riches and superior recruitment policy with a full, healthy team of 9 outfield players and 5 rolling subs.
The Tigers decided to go full throttle and hope that those pre-season shuttle runs put enough miles in the tank to enable the intensity to last the full match. Set up defensively with the lowest of low blocks, utilizing the pace of Shane Pagel led to a smash and grab goal to take the lead, which was doubled before half time by George Dixon.
The second half was all about grit and spirit, last ditch tackles & goal line clearances. The only thing missing was a Terry Butcher head bandage. The Tigers held on as Sundridge pulled back into the game, but a brace by George Dixon to complete his hat-trick killed the game in the dying moments and Holland held on for a famous 4-2 victory, celebrated with a packet of penguins for the players and a cup of tea for the coaches. Once more into the breach next week. Hopefully with a few more players.
